Novak Djokovic honors Italy again, winning the ATP Finals in Turin for the second consecutive year after the victory in 2022. Seven are his total victories in the end-of-season tournament, for a unique and absolute record.
Formidable performance by Jannik Sinner who in turn honors Italy with the first final of an Azzurro’s player. No one had ever pushed to the last day. A few more editions available to put the icing on the cake with a final victory.
The Final was a completely different match from last Tuesday: Novak Djokovic takes revenge, entering the court in a much more determined way. Jannik Sinner appeared less brilliant, with a tension to take into consideration playing at home.
In 1.43 H, Novak Djokovic 6/3, 6/3 vs Jannik Sinner
Balanced opening set but it immediately appeared that Jannik did not have the same rhythm and precision as in recent rounds. Nole appears more concentrated than normal, converting the only break point obtained and then managing it. Second set, the Serbian freezes the Italian with a break in the early stages of the set. An interminable game seems to have aroused Sinner but, Djokovic always resists, trying to increase the advantage by reaching the final second break. Thinking about the match at the beginning of the week, Djokovic maintained precision and condition, while Sinner dropped in performance without being able to improve it during the final. Some statistics: 1st serve points won 88% and 94% for the Serbian, 69% and 52% for the Italian. Break points converted 1/1 and 2/7 for Novak, 0/0 and 0/2 for Jannik.
Huge satisfaction between the Djokovic’s family and team for Nole but also, great appreciation from Sinner’s family and team to for Jannik.
After an exciting season, could Novak Djokovic end his career as a winner with a final record? Many champions have done it. Could he continue other seasons at high levels? Certainly yes, nothing prevents it (perhaps hypothetically the opponents).
Is Jannik Sinner a certainty? Surely. I have already indicated how the value and qualities are indisputable. In Italy he could share further finals with other Azzurri if they return from injuries, visibility and difficult moments.
The Italian spectators present at the Pala Alpitour, just a few scattered groups, transformed themselves into hypothetical supporters of the Netherlands by highlighting an orange, created instead for Jannik’s appreciation of carrots. Next year again in Turin, or at the Foro Italico? Azzurro is better 😉
In doubles: Rajeev Ram / Joe Salisbury 6/3, 6/4 vs Marcel Granollers / Horacio Zeballos in 1.09 H.
The Anglo-American duo with a break point per set cooled the Argentine-Spanish one.
The ATP season ends, while the last act of the Davis Cup begins shortly. From what it is possible to write now, depending on the climate that one will find and experience visually and directly, at least kisses-hugs. See you from January 2024, in some phases of tournaments and Grand Slam.
