Australian Open Women’s Semifinals

by Alain Chivilò

Aryna vs Qinwen is the final of the 2024 Australian Open.

Two semi-finals tough and played until the last breath and until the last energy to be spent. Break, break back, every point was fought to the max. Even the game duration, except for rounding, were the same for both matches.

Aryna Sabalenka, seeded no. 2, confirms the prediction and reaches the final act to try to win the 2023’s title.

In 1.43 h, Aryna Sabalenka 7/6 (2), 6/4 vs Coco Gauff.

Great battle and competitive female fury. In the opening set Aryna breaks but Coco responds. In a mix of breaks and breaks back – 4/10 Sabalenka, 3/4 Gauff – the tie break was unavoidable, which the Belarusian clearly and impetuously imposes her game. In the second set, balance until 4-4 with Sabalenka breaking for the victory: break points won 1/5, against the American’s zero, enough to close and go to the Final.

Aryna Sabalenka becomes the favorite to win the last match at the AO. Tournament always well conducted and played with very few failures. Power and control. Coco Gauff after the victory in the US Open reaches the Semifinal of the AUS Open. Today’s USA player to bet on, even for those who were skeptical years ago. She will not miss her continuity.

Qinwen Zheng, seeded no. 12, she upsets the prediction and deservedly reaches the final.

In 1.43 h, Qinwen Zheng 6/4, 6/4 vs Dayana Yastremska.

An extra break per set was used by Zheng to beat a Yastremska who started from the Qualifiers and always gave everything. Although she required medical timeout, Ukraine tried hard to reach the deciding set, or at least to win. The Chinese, very solid, never gave up and at the right moment delivered the deadly break in a glacial manner. Break points won, first set, Zheng 2/8, Yastremska 1/6, second set, 2/3, 1/4 respectively.

Qinwen Zheng, if she doesn’t think too much about being in the final, could cause some troubles to the favorite. The trend seen of an improvement in the 2023 season finale is continuing with the current very prestigious result. Dayana Yastremska won her tournament, demonstrating an amazing physical and technical condition considering the past months. She has to continue like this.
