Women’s and Men’s Relay in Oestersund

by Alain Chivilò

The news of the day is the “greeting” crossing the final line by Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen.

Focusing: the Norwegian athlete at the finish line, the fourth and last of the relay scheduled in a race kept under control and won, made the umbrella gesture (bras d’honneur) in a subdued but evident way.

Norway, like other Nordic countries, is known for a respectful sporting culture. Today, the last day of November 2023, in an almost hidden but evident way on television, the umbrella was not nice towards Sweden, the attendance of different countries in the stadium and the live broadcast. Probably an act of revenge against frustration but, at certain levels of visibility, it could have been avoided, having won the race. (What should I do about a situation I’m still experiencing?).

The Norwegian national team in two other athletes showed themselves entertained, playful and almost mocking something (we don’t know about) with clearly visible laughter. At the sixth race of a very long, long World Cup, where everything is still to be decided, I would have been more humble, but sorry, I’m just a winter fan.

In conclusion, it was probably an ironic and braggart play, as today’s winning team could highlight.

Women 4×6 km Relay

Norway – Marthe Krakstad Johansen, Juni Arnekleiv, Karoline Offigstad Knotten, Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold – prone 0+4 / standing 0+5 – won the relay.

Sweden, the sisters of Sweden – Anna Magnusson, Linn Persson, Elvira Oeberg, Hanna Oeberg –  prone 0+2 / standing 1+7 – very close to the victory found emotions in the last at the shooting range. +41.6

Germany – Janina Hettich-Walz, Selina Grotian, Vanessa Voigt, Franziska Preuss – prone 0+1 / standing 0+3 – maintained the third position close to the second. +47.9

Excellent performance by Elvira Oeberg who allowed her sister to maintain the lead until almost the end. The Norwegians proved to be as united in their results as the Germans. Italy presented a ‘new’ 3/4 – Rebecca Passler, Dorothea Wierer, Samuela Comola, Hannah Auchentaller – 0+3 / 2+4 – with some misses by Comola. With Lisa Vittozzi the Italian’s relay could offer new smiles in view of the Olympics. Eighth position in the race +4.56.9

Men 4×7.5 km Relay

After the first fractionist, the balance among Switzerland, France, Norway, Italy, Austria, Germany was broken with Norway in command until the end. For second and third place France comes out ahead of Germany.

Norvegia – Endre Stroemsheim, Tarjei Boe, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen – 0+3 / 0+4 – won the relay.

France – Eric Perrot, Emilien Jacquelin, Fabien Claude, Quentin Fillon Maillet – 0+7 / 0+4 – Second position by Fillon Maillet on last 0/0. +20.6

Germany – David Zobel, Philipp Nawrath, Benedikt Doll, Johannes Kuehn  – in business with France for the silver medal. + 50.5

Next to close the first stage in Sweden:  Sprint + Pursuit (7.5+10 km Women, 10+12.5 Men).
