WTA Finals Cancun Day 4

by Alain Chivilò

GNP Seguros, WTA Finals, Cancun, Mexico, 2023.

A day full of fun and encouragement between sun and wind.

Iga Swiatek, especially in the first set, confirmed her Terminator’s mood as seen in the opening match. Always in attack, deep and angled shots, few times far from the baseline, truly impressive on a tennis level. If this continuity also occurs in the second set, from January 2024 there will be few moments to see her defeated. Iga walks on to the Semifinals.

Chetumal Group, standings: Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Ons Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova.

Iga Swiatek 6/0, 7/5 vs Cori Gauff in 1.29 H.

Hard opening set, for Coco Gauff. Like a boxer Iga Swiatek constantly hit and pressed. Few opportunities for the Americana. Second set completely different. Swiatek changed pace with more errors, becoming alternating in intensity. Gauff finds the play again leading the set. Break points, Swiatek 3/7, Gauff 2/3. At the end of the set the Polish reaches Coco and wins. Two sets conducted differently by Iga Swiatek but always winners. On Halloween and Día de Muertos, scary. The concept already expressed always remains: to win vs Iga it’s necessary to have a superior rhythm, if any. Not a great day for Gauff but, in tennis, tomorrow is always another day and then another week. As note, 3-2 for Gauff serving, a game of circa 13 minutes but, personally, I found nothing to laugh and smile about the players, as evidenced by the cameras framing the stars and stripes corner.

Ons Jabeur 6/4, 6/3 vs Marketa Vondrousova in 1.29 H.

Balanced and alternating match. Ons had more continuity while Marketa was more discontinuous and suffered especially the wind. In the opening set, with equal opportunities, one more break from Jabeur closed it (2/7, 1/7). Second set on the same line but, with more breaks and break backs (4/6, 2/2).

In doubles:

– Mahahual Group:

at the deciding set, Krejcikova-Siniakova, down 0-1, 3/6, 7/5, 10/6 vs Gauff-Pegula in 1.49 H. A match full of intensity.

Dabrowski-Routliffe 6/4, 6/2 vs Siegemund-Zvonareva in 1.28 H.

– Maya Ka’an Group, Sanders-Mertens 7/5, 6/4 vs Melichar-Martinez/Perez.
